There are several historical attractions, the most impressive being a fortress built in the 17th century, which wa linked to the city by a long, walled corridor. Some parts of the ramparts surrounding the walled city dotted with observation holes, are still visible. You will also explore the old Arab quarter with the mausoleum of Al Habib Omar Bin Sumet and several mosques
dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. The town also has several public squares, from the 17th and 18th centuries, surrounded by monumental gates and masonry benches. Visit the handicrafts shop at the center of the town to see fine examples of local woodcarving and other arts and crafts.

On a short hike to the crater's rim, one can see the efforts made to protect the community by fortifying the hilltop. For centuries the town of Iconi served as the capital for the sultanate of Bambao. At its heart lies the ancient sultan's palace, KaviriDjewé, built from coral limestone. In the heart of the Medina are the bangwes, historic open spaces where the men still meet to debate and make decisions for the community. On the outskirts of the town lies Lake Marabou.
